Kat Gallicere’s first collages were plastered on the walls of her teenage bedroom: compositions of pieces from the ELLE magazines her mother received by post every Monday. What a treasure trove, then, for the collage artist, this collection of magazines, a living archive of twentieth-century fashion.

Magazines remain his favorite tool and material, inspiring a series of works that PENELOPE’S is delighted to present for its first sale, as a counterpoint to this history of style on glossy paper.

Using this two-dimensional fashion as a starting point, Kat cuts, juxtaposes, superimposes and plays with different eras and paper textures to create mischievous, elegant “creatures” embodying her vision of the PENELOPE’S woman. As fascinated by the aesthetics of collage as she is by the powers of dress, she weaves endless links between the two, gracefully interweaving these two vocabularies: fashion, as much as collage, is her language.

“These collages are inspired by this extraordinary collection of magazines dating from 1921 to 1995. A play on the existing, the eras, the clothing styles, the different textures of paper prints, to infuse a singular style and give birth to new, multiple creatures. PENELOPE’S creatures.

I summoned them into my imagination, for graphic and emotional situations on the edge of reality.”
